What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a very effective form of manual therapy, and treatment aims to relieve your pain and improve your body's function.

Osteopathic treatment helps a wide range of patients of all ages by treating joints, muscles and ligaments, using a variety of techniques to suit each individual. Some of the conditions that can be helped include:

  • Back pain
  • Sciatica
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Neck pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Foot pain

Why Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is very effective because not only is your immediate local problem diagnosed and treated, but also any predisposing factors are identified and treated i.e. the body is examined as a whole.

This is important because if one part of the body is restricted, then the rest of the body compensates, which can cause pain elsewhere. For example restriction in the upper back may predispose to shoulder and neck pain. Because such wider factors are addressed, this means a better outcome.

As well as hands on treatment, advice is given on how to prevent your problem recurring.

An osteopath must complete a full time, four-year degree course, which gives them a detailed knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology. This allows diagnosis of your musculoskeletal problem, and screening for potential medical issues. They must then register with the General Osteopathic Council, a regulated body that maintains high standards and continual training across the profession.
